Chapter 1 — The People of 'Aad and Their Greatness

The people of 'Aad were one of the most powerful civilizations to have existed after the flood of Nuh. Settled in the Ahqaf region, at the edges of southern Arabia, they were renowned for their imposing stature, extraordinary physical strength, and monumental constructions. The Quran describes them as the builders of Iram Dhat al-'Imad — the city of tall pillars whose glory had no equal on earth. This material prosperity bred in them a fatal pride. They said arrogantly: "Who is mightier than us?" They forgot that Allah Himself is mightier. It was in this context that Hud, one of their own, received the prophetic mission. He was not an outsider — he came from their own blood, spoke their language, knew their culture. Allah always chooses His prophets from among the peoples they are to guide, so that the message is received with familiarity and understanding.
