✦ Summary

Ibrahim is the father of the prophets and the model of total submission to Allah. From the destruction of idols to the trial of fire, from the sacrifice of his son to the building of the Kaaba, his entire life was an act of worship. Allah took him as a close friend.

Chapter 1 — The Break with Idolatry

Ibrahim was born into a family whose father, Azar, was a sculptor of idols. From a young age, Ibrahim was troubled by the contradiction between divine greatness and these mute stone statues. He observed the stars, then the moon, then the sun — searching for the true God. When they all set, he concluded: "I cannot love what disappears." His heart was naturally turned toward the one Creator. One day, taking advantage of a festival during which the temple was empty, Ibrahim entered and destroyed all the idols except the largest one, on which he hung his axe. When accused, he replied with irony: "Why do you not ask it?" — showing them that idols which do not speak, do not see, and do not think deserve no worship. This moment is one of the most celebrated in the Quran for its rhetorical power and its demonstration of the logic of tawhid.
