Chapter 1 — The Miraculous Birth
The announcement of Ishaq's birth is one of the most moving moments in the Quran. Three angels, in the form of men, visited Ibrahim. After the meal, they gave him the good news of a learned son. Sara, Ibrahim's wife, who was listening behind the curtain, burst out laughing in astonishment — she and her husband were very old. She exclaimed: "How can I bear a child when I am an old woman, and my husband is an old man? This is indeed a strange thing!" The angels answered her: "Do you marvel at the decree of Allah? May Allah's mercy and blessings be upon you, people of the house. He is indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious." This miraculous birth at an advanced age — Sara was over seventy years old according to tradition — symbolically foreshadows the even more extraordinary birth of Isa from Maryam, without a father.
