✦ Summary

Yunus was sent to Nineveh but left his mission before receiving permission to do so. He boarded a ship, was thrown overboard during a storm, and was swallowed by a great fish. In the belly of the whale, he called upon Allah in the darkness — this supplication is one of the most powerful in the Quran. Allah answered him and Yunus was cast up on the shore. He returned to Nineveh, where a hundred thousand people converted.

Chapter 1 — The Premature Departure

Yunus was sent to the great city of Nineveh (present-day Mosul in Iraq). Faced with his people's refusal and their persistence in impiety, he left his mission without receiving divine permission — a unique prophetic lapse in the Quran. He boarded a ship. During a storm, the crew cast lots to lighten the vessel — the lot fell on Yunus. He was thrown into the sea and swallowed by an immense fish. The Quran says: "Had he not been of those who glorify Allah, he would have remained inside its belly until the Day of Resurrection." It was Yunus's constant glorification of Allah that saved him — the lesson is striking: ordinary dhikr prepares one for extraordinary salvation.

📖 Quranic verse

🇬🇧 And indeed, Jonah was of the messengers — when he fled to the laden ship
