✦ Summary

Zakariyya was a priest of the Temple in Jerusalem and Maryam's guardian. Old and childless, his wife being barren, he called upon Allah in a deeply moving secret prayer to grant him an heir. Allah answered his prayer and announced to him the birth of Yahya — a biological miracle that foreshadows the birth of Isa.

Chapter 1 — The Old Man's Secret Prayer

Zakariyya was Maryam's guardian in the Temple. He noticed that she always had fresh provisions: "O Maryam, from where does this come to you?" She answered: "From Allah — Allah provides without measure to whom He wills." This ordinary miracle awakened in Zakariyya an extraordinary hope. He called upon his Lord in a low voice — the Quran says "nida'an khafiyyan" (a secret call) — acknowledging his weakness: old, white-haired, with a barren wife. He asked not by right but in hope: "I have never been in my supplication to You unblessed." This trust in the divine answer, despite every biologically impossible appearance, is the heart of Zakariyya's prayer.

📖 Quranic verse

Idh nādā rabbahu nidā'an khafiyyan qāla rabbi innī wahana l-'aẓmu minnī wa-shtā'ala r-ra'su shaybā

🇫🇷 Quand il appela son Seigneur d'un appel secret, il dit : "Seigneur, mes os se sont affaiblis et mes cheveux ont blanchi"
