✦ Summary

Yusuf is the only prophet whose entire story is the subject of a complete surah. From his brothers' jealousy at the bottom of a well, to an Egyptian prison, to the office of vizier, his life is a masterpiece of faith, chastity, and forgiveness.

Chapter 1 — The Dream and the Well

Yusuf saw in a dream the sun, the moon, and eleven stars prostrating before him. His father Yaqub, understanding the prophetic significance of this dream, advised him not to tell it to his brothers for fear of their jealousy. But the brothers' jealousy was already there, deep and tenacious. They plotted: "Let us kill Yusuf, or cast him into a distant land." The most reasonable among them proposed abandoning him at the bottom of a well rather than killing him. They carried out their plan. Yusuf, a child perhaps seven to ten years old, was thrown into the well. He wept. But Allah revealed to him: "You will surely inform them of this deed of theirs, while they do not perceive [your identity]." This revelation at the bottom of the well is one of the most moving images in the Quran: in the darkest moment, the divine light shines. The brothers returned to their father with an animal's blood-stained shirt.

📖 Quranic verse

🇬🇧 We revealed to him: you will surely inform them of this deed of theirs while they are unaware
