Chapter 1Al-Malâika

The Angelsالْمَلَائِكَة

Angels (الملائكة) are creatures of light created by Allah, incapable of disobedience. Believing in their existence is the second pillar of Islamic faith (Al-Iman).

📖 Quranic Verse — At-Tahrim 66:6

لَّا يَعْصُونَ اللَّهَ مَا أَمَرَهُمْ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ

They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, and they do what they are commanded.

Nature of Angels

✦

Created from light (nûr) — unlike man created from clay and jinn created from fire.

✦

Without free will: they obey Allah in all things and cannot sin.

✦

They have no gender, do not eat or drink, and never tire.

✦

They can take human form to carry out a divine mission.

✦

They glorify Allah ceaselessly, day and night, without ever stopping.

The Main Angels

1

Jibrîl (Jibreel)

The Angel of Revelation — responsible for conveying Allah's word to the prophets. He is described as the most powerful of angels. The Prophet ﷺ saw him in his true form with 600 wings covering the entire horizon.

📿 Sahih Al-Boukhari 3232 · An-Najm 53:5-9

2

Mikâîl (Michael)

In charge of rain, vegetation and sustenance (rizq). He distributes Allah's provision among all creatures according to His will.

📿 Al-Baqara 2:98 · Tafsir Ibn Kathir

3

Isrâfîl

Tasked with blowing the Trumpet (As-Sûr) on the Day of Judgment. The first blow will kill every living being; the second will resurrect all the dead for the Resurrection.

📿 Az-Zumar 39:68 · Ibn Hibbân

4

Azrâîl — Malak Al-Mawt

The Angel of Death, tasked with taking souls at the exact moment fixed by Allah. For believers, the soul is gently extracted like flowing water; for disbelievers, it is torn out violently.

📿 As-Sajda 32:11 · An-Nâzi'ât 79:1-2

5

Mâlik

Guardian of Hellfire (Jahannam). He is the chief of the nineteen guardians of Hell (Az-Zabâniyya). The people of the fire will call out begging: 'O Mâlik! Let your Lord cause us to die!'

📿 Az-Zukhruf 43:77 · Al-Muddaththir 74:30

6

Ridhwân

Guardian of Paradise (Al-Jannah). He will welcome the believers with greetings of peace (As-Salâm) on the Day of Resurrection. The gates of Paradise will open at their arrival.

📿 Az-Zumar 39:73 · Tafsir At-Tabari

7

Munkar & Nakîr

Two angels who descend into the grave as soon as the pall-bearers move away. They ask three questions: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is this man? (pointing to the Prophet ﷺ)'

📿 Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1071 · Abu Dawud 4753

8

Kirâman Kâtibîn

The 'noble scribes' — two angels assigned to every human, one on the right shoulder recording good deeds, the other on the left recording bad deeds. They never leave their subject.

📿 Al-Infitar 82:10-12 · Qâf 50:17-18
