Definition — Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar

"A person who met the Prophet ﷺ, believed in him and died as a Muslim, even if they apostatized and then returned to Islam."

Their status

The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ are the best of people after the Prophets, and are the best generation of this community. They had the best belief and the best understanding of the Quran and Sunnah.

Quranic Verses

وَالسَّابِقُونَ الأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالأَنصَارِ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَانٍ رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُواْ عَنْهُ

The forerunners — the first of the Emigrants and the Helpers — and those who followed them in goodness. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him.

🟢 Coran 9:100

لَّقَدْ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ يُبَايِعُونَكَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ

Allah was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree.

مُّحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ أَشِدَّاءُ عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَاءُ بَيْنَهُمْ

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. And those with him are firm against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure.

Not equal among you are those who spent and fought before the conquest... They are greater in degree than those who spent and fought afterward. But to each Allah has promised the best reward.

Among the believers are men true to what they pledged to Allah. Some of them have fulfilled their vow, and some still wait. They have not changed at all.

Prophet's ﷺ Hadiths about the Companions

لَا تَسُبُّوا أَصْحَابِي

Do not insult my companions! By the One who holds my soul in His Hand, if one of you spent gold equivalent to the mountain of Uhud, you would not reach a handful given in charity by one of them, nor even half of it.

Words of the Scholars

Ibn Mas'ûd (رضي الله عنه)
Allah looked into the hearts of His servants and found that the heart of Muhammad ﷺ is the best. Then He looked into the hearts of the companions and found them the best after him. He made them ministers of His Messenger.

Whoever reads their biographies with understanding will realize with certainty that they are the best of humans after the Prophets. There has never been anyone like them and there never will be.

Imam Ahmad
It is part of the Sunnah to mention the virtues of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — all without exception — and to refrain from speaking of the differences that occurred between them.
