The 5 Pillars of Islam

The foundations upon which all Islamic practice rests

Founding Hadith

🔵 HADITH SAHÎHBukhârî n°8 · Muslim n°16

"Islam is built on five things: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger, establishing prayer, paying zakat, pilgrimage, and fasting Ramadan."

Narrator : 'Abdullâh ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khattâb (رضي الله عنهما) — fils du 2e calife

📚 Scholar's note : Imam al-Nawawi writes in his Sharh of Sahih Muslim: "This hadith is one of the most important in Islam — it summarizes its foundations." Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (d.795H) dedicated an entire work to it: Fath al-Bari.

The 5 Pillars in Detail

🏛️ Metaphor : "The 5 pillars are like 5 columns of a house. If one column falls, the house is weakened — but it is the column of the Shahada that supports all the others." — Ibn Taymiyya, Majmu' al-Fatawa.
